June 2nd Crystal Grove Herkimer Dig & Pig roast 2018
Ten CVMC members made the journey out to Saint Johnsville NY for the 2 nd annual “Pig & Dig” at Crystal Grove diamond mine and campground. The day was gray and overcast to start with warm and humid temps and pesky nuisance rain showers. It was actually quite a nice day to be in the dig areas as bright sun just reflects and make it like an oven. There was a substantial crowd for the day with a constant ringing of hammers on spring steel and a couple people were really moving some serious rock! The new owners and management team have really done a lot to improve the digging by bringing in heavy equipment, cleaning out all the old stone, removing over burden in new areas. There had been talk that Crystal Grove was played out and wasn't worth going to but that was clearly not the case and everybody was finding good material. The pig roast was an added bonus to the day and with the cost only $15 for a day of digging and a pig roast you couldn't get a better deal anywhere! The pig was great, the digging was just as good and the company was out of this world.
