Loudville lead mines 2014

Tour Map

About 30 club members gathered on Mineral Street in Easthampton on Saturday, April 12 for a trip to the Loudville lead mines.
We began with a guided tour led by Wayne Perrea, a local history enthusiast. He was accompanied by a video crew. They plan to produce a documentary for the Easthampton cable television channel. Wayne led us through the woods to the sites of the engine shaft and stamp mill, the smelter, the drainage adit, and the air shaft. The tour ended back at the road around noon. A few diehards held out to the end, but many members had gone back to the dumps earlier as their enthusiasm for hiking faded. We dug in the dumps for several more hours, finding specimens of quartz, galena, wulfenite, pyromorphite, and a few other minerals. We were lucky with the weather; it had rained the day before, but we enjoyed sunny skies and mild temperatures.
