Education Committee Trip For Quincy Granite

On May 19th three members of the Education Committee traveled to Quincy MA to the area of the Quincy Granite Quarries. This trip was arranged through the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for the purpose of collecting pieces of authentic Quincy Granite for the Education display cases the club makes. We planned on meeting the State Archeologist, Ellen Burkland at the site around 10am so we could meet her, explain our education program and collect some pieces of Quincy Granite. We had asked to collect a few 5 gallon pails full of Granite which will give us enough Granite to last quite a while. After collecting the samples we took a walk through the old quarry where we saw remnants of the old workings including the mast and jib of an 80'+ tall wooden crane used for hoisting the blocks of Granite. The quarry today is much different than it was in years past. It has been filled in areas with excess fill from the Big Dig in Boston and made into public access land with trails, pond areas and the tall Granite faces left from the Quarrying are used for rock climbing walls. This was an important and successful trip for the Education Committee and the CVMC
