Betts mine trip report 2013

The Betts Manganese Mine trip got moved mid week due to a week long heat wave with temps in the mid 90’s and humidity and dew points at the extreme. The forecast was for the weather to break on Saturday afternoon with severe thunder storms so we moved the Saturday trip to Sunday to try and make the trip safer and more enjoyable. The decision was surely the right one as the temp Sunday AM was mid 60’s instead of high 70’s with low humidity. We met at the usual spot where 16 members gathered for the ride to the mine. After a brief walk around to show the new members the digs we were off and running. The sound’s of hammers was all that could be heard by 9am with several Oooos and Ahhhhs of excitement as specimens came out of the dumps. There wasn’t to much Rhodonite this trip, not like in the past but some nice Garnet specimens showed themselves early in the day for a new member, Betts seems to shine on new members with the gift of Garnets on Quartz! The Betts showed us a good time again this year and we look forward to next year.
