Schoharie NY Fossil Trip 6-9-12

The field trip to the Schohaire NY Quarry for fossils was well attended by 18 CVMC members. Off and on rain showers greeted us as we were driving to the meeting place but those and the cloudy cooler temps were a welcome surprise compared to last years bright sun and oven like heat! We arrived at the quarry for 9am and met our contact person who showed us to the area we could collect and after a quick safety briefing we were off to find our treasures. The collecting in the quarry was much different than at the road cut. There is only freshly broken rock from blasting with no weathering out as we find other places. This also meant looking very carefully and having to work for everything we found. Once we figured out how to collect this fresh rock we were off and running! Some nice Crinoid specimens were collected by a couple members but the fresh rock was hard to get specimens out of without damage. We broke for lunch, regrouped and decided to go to the Rickard Hill road cut to round out the day. This was a very good trip and hopefully the next time we go we will be able to collect some older levels of the quarry instead of the fresh benches they were working off of this time.
